Suzuki Recalls 193,936 Grand Vitara, SX4 Models For Airbag Fault

2006-2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara, 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4

The Problem: The pressure-sensitive mat used to detect the weight of passengers flexes over time, according to a NHTSA statement, and can eventually fail. In that case, the Suzuki Occupant Classification System (OCS) is unable to determine whether a child or an adult is seated in the passenger seat, so it always enables the passenger airbag. This could lead to the airbag deploying at full power, potentially killing or injuring a small passenger. Suzuki extended the warranty on this component to ten years/ 100,000 miles in 2012, but now has decided to issue a recall.

The Fix: Suzuki will replace the front passenger seat cushion and OCS for free. However, Suzuki doesn't currently have enough replacement parts to begin the recall, so owners will receive letters at a later date when the recall can begin.

Number Of Vehicles Potentially Affected: 193,936 2006-2011 Suzuki Grand Vitara SUVs and 2007-2011 Suzuki SX4 compacts.
