Surprise, Surprise: the 2014 Mazda 6 and Takeri Concept Are Nearly Identical

Logic says that it shouldn't be surprising when a manufacturer's production car looks like the concept, but Mazda seems to think that its new 2014 Mazda 6 -- which looks almost identical to the Takeri concept -- is going against the flow.
For years we've seen manufacturers completely overhaul designs between concept and production stages, but Mazda hasn't been one to follow suit. Its CX-5 compact utility vehicle looks quite similar to the corresponding Minagi concept, and the swoopy Takeri concept that bowed at the 2011 Tokyo Motor Show gave way to a nearly identical Mazda 6 production car at the Moscow Auto Show earlier this year. Parking the two side-by-side, as Mazda PR has now done, reveals very few differences between the two vehicles. As you can see from the photos, the 6 (left) only differs significant changes in the form of protruding door handles and fog lights, along with some minor nips and tucks. Mazda says that the 6 differs slightly in dimensions as well -- it's slightly higher, shorter, and thinner than the Takeri concept, while maintaining the same proportions.
Underneath that sheetmetal is either a 2.0-liter or 2.5-liter Skyactiv I-4 gas engine, which offer 148 hp and 189 hp, respectively, in Russian-spec form. While those figures languish behind competitors like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry, the 6 also promises impressive -- if not class-leading -- fuel economy. Mazda says the car can deliver 39 mpg combined on the European test cycle with the 2.0, and 37 mpg combined with the 2.5.
The 6 is headed to American shores later this year, just in time to butt heads with the brand new Ford Fusion and Honda Accord. For the record, the Honda Accord's concept and production cars look very similar (save for some LED running light treatments on the concept car) and the Fusion's production car is similar to, but heavily derived from, the muscular Evos coupe concept.
