Subaru Hints at New Japanese-Market WRX STI tS

Subaru is getting ready to release another WRX STI variant, but this time, it is expected to not boast more power. The key attraction to this model? A carbon fiber roof installed under the tS umbrella.

In case you missed out, tS is a milder lineup of performance tuning done by the craftspeople at Subaru Tecnica International, the automaker's in-house performance division (the short moniker stands for "tuned by STI"). The first to get the tS treatment was the Legacy 2.5GT.

From the STI mini-site, we can tell the production model a WRX STI sedan, however, we wouldn't be surprised if the hatchback is offered with the tS goods, too.

A carbon fibe roof isn't anything new for the brand -- it displayed a concept called the WRX STICarbon at last year's Tokyo Motor Show. That car was based on the STI A-Line with automatic transmission and detuned 296-horsepower flat-four turbo mill.

Japanese publication Car Watch described the carbon fiber roof as 5 kilograms lighter than the standard tin top. The weave is four-layers thick and is coated with a clear coat designed to protect the composite for 10 years.

Our sources has some tS parts coming to North American shores soon, although it is still unclear if the carbon fiber roof will make it.

The car is slated to be revealed in the coming weeks, so stay tuned.
