Subaru "Confirms" 2015 BRZ Convertible With Diesel-Hybrid, AWD

Subaru announced this morning that, in response to criticism from enthusiasts and the media, it will launch a wholly revised version of the BRZ sports coupe. In 2015, the Subaru BRZ will be made available as a two-seat convertible, with a twin-turbo diesel-hybrid powertrain and all-wheel drive.

"Having just launched the current model to widespread critical acclaim, we are tired of fighting off the constant speculation about what's 'next' and so we are just giving in and delivering all the speculation in one vehicle," a Subaru spokesman said in a statement released April 1.

The revised model is a clear and swift response to automotive critics and Internet commenters who have criticized the lightweight, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe for glaring omissions like the lack of a twin-turbocharged engine. Moreover, adding all-wheel-drive will help the 2015 Subaru BRZ fit in with the rest of the sensible Subaru lineup, launching a two-seat convertible version may finally hush Mazda fanatics who claim the MX-5 Miata is a superior sports car, and adding a diesel-hybrid powertrain will sate hypermiling fuel-economy fanatics.

The bad news is that after installing switches to raise and lower the convertible top, Subaru was unable to find space for a display for a backup camera. And the 2015 Subaru BRZ diesel hybrid AWD convertible will be sold only in black.

Worse still, it will make our Four Seasons 2013 Subaru BRZ look like a real lame duck. Our car must struggle along with a responsive 200-hp gas engine, a lightweight coupe body, and a nimble rear-wheel-drive configuration. We hope to upgrade to the 2015 diesel-hybrid AWD convertible as soon as it is available, putting an end to our constant moaning that the 2013 model is too much fun to drive.
