Subaru is bringing a performance-oriented concept and XV Crosstrek Hybrid to the New York auto show next week. The two Subarus fall on completely different sides of the automaker's lineup, though the performance car debut is just a concept.
The XV Crosstrek Hybrid is Subaru's first hybrid, and just like the regular XV Crosstrek, will come with standard all-wheel drive. The 2013 Subaru XV Crosstrek is powered by a 148-hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine, mated to a five-speed manual or CVT. Neither variant is especially quick, and we the hybrid model will, no doubt, focus on fuel economy. EPA-rated mileage on the non-hybrid model is 23/30 mpg city/highway with the manual and 25/33 mpg with the CVT -- we'd be surprised to see anything lower than 30 mpg in the city for the hybrid XV Crosstrek.
Back at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show, Subaru introduced the Hybrid Tourer concept, which used a 2.0-liter direct-injected flat-four with a lithium-ion battery. Depending on the success of the XV Crosstrek Hybrid, we may see a hybrid Impreza in the future.
As for Subaru's performance concept car, with the Impreza WRX on the way out, we can only hope the concept previews that car's replacement. Though the rear-drive Subaru BRZ is entertaining to drive, those who want a fun Subaru with room for four may soon be out of luck when the Impreza WRX is discontinued. Could the Subaru performance car concept give us a sneak peek at its replacement? We'll find out next week.
