Stylish Italian: Fiat and Gucci Team Up for Special 500

The Fiat 500 was known as an automotive style leader when it was first unveiled in the 1950s. Now, Fiat and Italian fashion house Gucci have teamed up for the 2011 500 by Gucci special edition.

To celebrate the 150th anniversary of Italy’s unification and, of course, the 90th anniversary of Gucci, the two companies have teamed up to create a stylish way to travel.

“In the 50s, the Fiat 500 created a style revolution when it first hit the road,” saysFridaGiannini, Gucci’s creative director, in a prepared statement. “It quickly became the must-have car of its time. Traveling in style has also been at the heart of Gucci, and the idea of this collaboration struck me as a perfect opportunity to create a new modern travel statement.”

The special 500 by Gucci is decked out in either black or white pearl paint, and is accented with the Gucci’s signature green-and-red pinstripe wrapping around the car. Chrome accents and color-matched 16-inch wheels with the Gucci logo complete the exterior changes. Stepping inside, the exterior color palette carries over, with coordinating trim, satin chrome accents, and ivory and black two-tone leather embossed with Gucci’s double-G emblem. The green and red Gucci stripe also appears on the seats, the gear shift, the key cover, and seatbelts.

The 500 by Gucci debuted earlier this week at the Milan Fashion Week, but it will be displayed at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show in a dedicated Gucci pop-up store housed within Fiat’s display stand. Prices start from €17,000 ($23,386) in Italy including destination, which is roughly an additional €4550 ($6225) over the base 500 Pop. It will be available throughout Europe starting in July and other global markets at the end of 2011, but we’ve received no word on if this Gucci-riffic model will arrive stateside. Should it? Bellissima! But, the most gorgeous 500 I ever laid eyes on was the all-black in a teflon finish...Amazing. Will post this article to my blog - Burnt by the Tuscan Sun
