Strong Hyundai and Kia Sales Down From March 2012, Up Over April 2011

While Kia and Hyundai posted their best sales months ever in March, Kia had its highest April sales on record and Hyundai had its second best sales month ever. Kia sold 47,550 units and Hyundai sold 62,264 units, both representing increases of about 1 percent compared to April 2011.

Kia’s Hots

Kia Rio: Rio sales were strong with a total of 4006 units sold. The redesigned subcompact bested April 2011’s sales numbers by 55.6 percent.

Kia Optima: The Optima continues to lead Kia’s sales with 11,021 units sold in April—an increase of 4488 units compared to April 2011.

Kia Soul: The popular box also saw a sales increase over April 2011, but only by 257 units for a total of 10,716 units sold. Despite 2891 fewer units sold compared to March 2012, year-to-date sales are up nearly 10,774 units from this same time last year.

Kia’s Nots:

Kia Sportage: The Kia Sportage is facing tougher competition as new and refreshed models like the 2012 Honda CR-V and 2013 Ford Escape are hitting showrooms. Kia managed to sell 3277 Sportage crossovers last month, down 30.8 percent from April 2011.

Kia Sorento: Kia’s three-row crossover also slipped last month compared to the same time last year. Only 9610 units were sold in April compared to 12,001 sold the same month in 2011, putting the Sorento behind the Optima as Kia's overall sales leader.

Kia Forte: Sales of Kia’s compact Forte sedan, hatchback, and coupe slipped nearly 1500 units last month compared to the same time in 2011, with only 7053 units sold.

Hyundai’s Hots:

Hyundai Azera: Now that the 2012 Hyundai Azera has made it to dealer lots, sales were up in April with 953 units sold.

Hyundai Equus: With 351 units sold, sales of the brand’s premium sedan were up 58.1 percent compared to April 2011.

Hyundai Accent: Accent sales grew 40.3 percent from last April to 6160 units last month, nearly matching the Santa Fe's 6318 sales.

Hyundai Genesis: Genesis sales jumped by 34.0 percent with 3548 units sold. Hyundai doesn’t separate sedan and coupe sales numbers, but sales should climb when the refreshed and more powerful 2013 Hyundai Genesis coupe goes on sale.

Hyundai’s Not-So-Hots:

Hyundai Sonata: The Sonata midsize sedan slipped 5.6 percent in April compared to the same month last year. Hyundai sold 20,521 units in April, down nearly 3000 units from March 2012.

Hyundai Elantra: Hyundai moved 16,836 units of the compact Elantra in April—a decrease of nearly 24 percent compared to the same time last year.

Hyundai Veracruz: Hyundai only sold 476 Veracruz three-row crossovers last month—a decrease of 25.5 percent from last April. The Veracruz will be replaced in 2013 by an all-new Santa Fe three-row crossover while the all-new two-row Santa Fe will be rechristened the Santa Fe Sport.
