If you're a fan of international sports car racing, you may soon see more snakes on the grid as SRT has launched the Viper GT3-R customer race car. The car draws heavily on the Viper GTS-R currently racing in ALMS, and is eligible to compete in FIA GT3-class races. The GT3-R is the first Viper race car to be offered since the Viper Competition Coupe.
Like the road-going SRT Viper, the racing-only variant packs a V-10 engine, and also receives an aero package, Xtrac six-speed sequential transmission with paddle shifters, six-piston front brake calipers and four-piston rears, multi-disc racing clutch, and a set of lightweight wheels. The GT3-R was co-developed by SRT and Riley Technologies, which has built Daytona prototypes for Grand Am and also helped build the GT2-class Corvette C6 ZR1 racers.
Technology from the LM GTE-class Viper GTS-R, which will race for the first time in the 24 Hours of Le Mans this weekend, can be found on the GT3-R. As you can see from the pictures in the gallery below, the GT3-R retains the massive rear wing, front splitter, and canards of the GTS-R.
The Viper GT3-R is estimated to cost $459,000, which is comparable to other GT3 customer race cars like the Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG GT3. Orders are being taken now for delivery in late 2013.
