Spotted! Is this BMW X6M Packing a Tri-Turbo Diesel?

BMW has been rolling out the prototypes in recent months – and it’s no surprise given how many of its models have been seeing refreshes and overhauls lately. Our friends at Motor Trend most recently snapped this X6M on the Nürburgring that has had its hood chopped open for some improvedrespiration.

Though almost all of BMW’s engines are now turbocharged, none of them wear a telltale hood scoop to aid in airflow for the turbochargers. Little else seems changed, so this specific X6M spotted could have a few powertrain possibilities for the gaping hole in the hood: it could be as simple as modifications to the current 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 engine, but other recently circulating rumors could spell an entirely different powerplant hiding in there.

Last week, we reported on BMW possibly stuffing a tri-turbo, diesel inline-six under the hood of the new M5 sedan. Could that engine be lurking beneath that cut in this X6M? The tri-turbo diesel is rumored to produce 500 hp and 650 lb-ft of torque – down on power from the current V-8 by 55 hp, but up on torque by an astounding 150 lb-ft. Whatever mill may be hiding in that X6M we’re fairly sure that it uses some kind of forced induction.

Stay tuned as the turbocharged story at BMW unfolds, and make sure to check out the full spy shots at Motor Trend.

Just wanted to point out that the current X6M does not have a 5.0 liter twin-turbocharged V8, it's actually a 4.4 liter twin-turbocharged V8.
