Spotted! BMW 3 Series GT Prototype Hits the Streets

We’ve long heard rumors of a BMW 3 Series hatchback/crossover, but thanks to our friends at Motor Trend, we’ve finally seen the real deal. These images show the so-called 3 Series Gran Turismo undergoing testing with almost no camouflage in sight.

Like the larger 5 GT, the 3 Gran Turismo is expected to use the same mechanicals as its sedan and coupe siblings, but wrap them in a unique fastback body that provides rear passengers with a little extra legroom. Seeing as this prototype wears heavy camouflage over the front fascia, expect the 3 GT’s nose to differ from that of normal 3 Series models.

However, there’s speculation that the car shown here may not even be badged as a 3 Series. New reports suggest the crossover may instead be labeled as a 4 Series, although we’d be surprised if BMW is willing to craft an all-new series for this model, considering a similar vehicle was simply rolled into an existing model line.

Do expect a number of turbocharged engine offerings, including both four-cylinder (likely the new 2.0-liter unit) and six-cylinder options. We also wouldn’t be surprised if the advent of the 3 GT/ 4 Series/ whatever BMW wants to call it will also trigger the death of the 3 Series wagon in North America.

I only have one question: WHY?! The 5-series GT is one ugly car and based on the photos this will not look any better. If you want a good looking hatchback (Let's admit that's what it is!) look at the Audi A5 Sportback whick I don't understand why is not sold in the US.
