Spied! BMW Adds Two Doors To 6 Series

BMW is readily filling every last niche in the marketplace that it can find. While the 5 Series GT may be a little less successful in our market than officials once hoped, BMW isn’t abandoning the idea of large grand touring vehicles quite yet. Our friends at Motor Trend spotted this 6 Series Gran Coupe out testing to duke it out with the Mercedes-Benz CLS, Audi A7, and Porsche Panamera.

After seeing BMW’s Gran Coupe concept at last year’s Beijing auto show, we quickly caught wind that the sleek four-door received the green light for production. Based off of and sitting at the top of the all-new 2012 6 Series range, the Gran Coupe couldfurther BMW’s roots in the burgeoning luxury four-door coupe segment.

The pre-production model spotted looks almost identical to the concept car, and essentially resembles a new 650i coupe wearinga few extra inches and an additional pair of doors. What we see isn’t exactly anything close to surprising. Front and rear fascias mirror those of the new 650i, while simple, defined character lines run from tip to tail, and the familiarHofmeister kink makes an appearance at the car’s C-pillar.

Expect powerplants and transmissions to mimic those of its coupe and convertible siblings. 650i models will likely debut with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V-8, good for 400 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque. Chances are that both six-speed manual and eight-speed automatic transmissions will be offered, but we’ll know more closer to the car’s launch.

There is a good chance that we’ll see the final 6 Series Gran Coupe at this fall Frankfurt Motor Show, but until then, head over to Motor Trend to check out the full spy shots.

About time! It looks good but BMW is late to the game. But the badge will sell it. Besides the world needed one more car I can't afford but want. (I wonder when Lexus will come up with its own CLS competitor.)
