Spied: BMW 2 Series and Facelifted M5 Sedan

Our spy photographer recently sent back images of two new BMW products – the new 2 Series coupe and what appears to be a mildly facelifted M5 sedan.

Let’s start with the BMW 2 Series: as you’ve heard before, this is the coupe version of the latest 1 Series range, and the only iteration that will be sold in the U.S. Although it bears a close resemblance to the F20 1 Series, the 2 Series’ roofline is longer, sloping, and boasts gently curved windows. It feels more E92 3 Series coupe-like, and far less upright than the present 1 Series range sold here.

If the 2 Series follows in the 3 Series/4 Series' footsteps, the car you're looking at is either some sort of 235i M Sport or the long-awaited M235i. At least, that's what we can pick up, judging from the dual exhausts (a signature feature on -35i coupes/sedans) and M Sport three-spoke steering wheel/manual transmission knob. Look closely and you'll see a 7000-rpm redline on the gauge cluster, too--the same as the -35i cars. The seats are also black suede or microfiber with blue contrast stitching--usually a hallmark of an M or M Sport model. Aside from those changes, however, the 2 Series' interior should look familiar to any BMW fan--the HVAC and audio controls and center stack setup look almost completely unchanged from the larger 3 and 4 Series models.

In the case of the M5, there's not much to report: the 2014-model-year car's upgrades appear to be limited to the front and rear fascias. Up front the M5 receives BMW's new corporate LED running lights, which take the old circular LEDs and flatten them at the top and bottom. Out back the taillights appear to be slightly different, and the rear diffuser may be hiding an additional trim strip. The car sits atop some large black wheels, which better show the car's carbon-ceramic brake setup.

We'll likely see the M5 in time for the 2014 model year; the 2 Series coupe should arrive in late 2013 or early 2014 as production begins in November of this year.
