We’ve heard rumors that Audi was preparing an S1 spin-off of its small A1 hatchback, but these new spy shots – captured by the folks at Motor Trend – sugges there’s an even hotter hatch under development. Is this the sign of an RS1?
Perhaps so. This black prototype looks similar to S1 testers we’ve seen out and about before, but looks much more aggressive. Massive air intakes – patterned after those used on the TT RS and the RS5 – blister from the front bumper and flank the front grille. Flared fenders provide room for larger wheel/tire packages, while chiseled side sills and a rally-inspired roof spoiler round out the look.
If the RS1’s exterior looks a little crazy, expect the mechanical bits beneath to be nothing short of mad. Like the S1, the RS1 is expected to utilize a turbocharged four-cylinder, but it edges ahead of its little brother in terms of both power and displacement.
While the S1 is rumored to utilize turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 rated at somewhere between 180-200 hp, the RS1 could make do with a version of Volkswagen’s 2.0T tuned to nearly 250 hp. Predictably, that power will be channeled through a six-speed manual transmission and Audi’s Quattro all-wheel-drive system.
Further details should be unveiled come March, as the RS1 is widely believed to debut at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show in Switzerland. Until then, scope out all the RS1 spy shots at Motor Trend by clicking here.
