Hanging out at Germany’s Nürburgring is a surefire way to get a sneak peek at upcoming performance cars, and the strategy has paid off for our colleagues at Motor Trend. These spy photos show the next Audi RS4 Avant being tested on the famed German circuit.
Though the badge in the grille says S4, there are several clear clues this is something more aggressive: the enlarged brakes, bigger RS5–style wheels, and subtly flared fenders out this as a test mule for the next high-performance Audi wagon. Under the hood, we’re expecting the same 450-horsepower, 4.2-liter V-8 that powers the Audi RS5 coupe, although there’s a small chance the company will debut a turbocharged V-6. Audi’s seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive will almost certainly be standard.
A resurrected RS4 would join the TT RS, RS3, RS5 Coupe, and RS6 in Audi’s European lineup of high-performance cars. Given that the RS6 is available in in Avant wagon form and the RS3 is a five-door hatchback, it wouldn’t be at all surprising to see the RS4 offered as a station wagon initially, just as Audi did with the RS6. Yet the likelihood that such a car will grace American dealerships is very slim; go-fast wagons like the RS4 Avant and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG wagon have made only fleeting appearances on our shores in the past, and they never sold in great volumes.
The TT RS is slated to debut here this fall, and we’ll be getting the RS5 coupe at some point in the near future, so hopefully those cars will pave the way for the return of the RS4 to the U.S. Check out the full set of spy photos at Motor Trend.
