These spy photos show the 2014 Toyota Tundra testing with a heavy dose of camouflage, but it won't be long until we see what lies beneath the tape and cladding. Toyota confirmed to us that the 2014 Tundra will debut next week at the Chicago auto show.
The Toyota Tundra was last redesigned in 2006 for the 2007 model year, so it's more than due for an update. (Coincidentally, the truck was also introduced at the Chicago auto show.) Our sources tell us, however, that a tight budget means the 2014 Tundra gets a cosmetic overhaul with few major mechanical changes. Still, it makes sense to refresh the Tundra given that it is already seven years old, plus rival trucks like the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and the 2013 Ram 1500 were also recently revamped.
Based on the spy photos, the 2014 Toyota Tundra will look quite similar to the current truck. A rounded nose with a broad grille and big headlights, a hood that tapers slightly toward the front, and pancake-flat door panels define this prototype's aesthetics. Expect the truck's 270-hp 4.0-liter V-6, 310-hp 4.6-liter V-8, and 5.7-liter V-8 to carry on mostly unchanged. Our sources say, however, that at least one of those engines will be revised for improved fuel economy.
The Tundra is an important model for Toyota, but it struggles to compete with pickup trucks from Detroit's Big Three automakers. Last year Toyota sold just 101,621 Tundra pickups -- barely a blip compared to the 293,363 Ram 1500, 418,312 Chevrolet Silverado, and 645,316 Ford F-Series sales recorded over the same period.
We'll have more once the 2014 Toyota Tundra makes its official debut next week in Chicago.
Speaking of Chicago, Toyota will also use the show to give away a 2013 RAV4 crossover for free. Those interested in winning the car can in one of several ways: by texting RAV4 to 27205; by filling out an online entry form; or by locating "snap tags" at Chicago-area Toyota dealers or the Chicago show, and emailing a photo of the tag to Toyota@snaptag.mobi. Entries are due February 14. Toyota will invite ten semi-finalists to the Toyota booth at the Chicago auto show on February 17. Each participant will receive an envelope, and the person whose envelope contains a photo of a 2013 Toyota RAV4 wins the car.
The RAV4 contest is only open to residents of Illinois or Indiana aged 21 and over.
