Spied! 2012 BMW M5, M6 Coupe, M6 Convertible Grocery Shopping in California

#BMW, #M6

Motor Trend reader Jon Welsh was fortunate enough to stumble on not one, but three camouflaged BMW M cars outside a southern California grocery store. A 2012 BMW M5 sedan was parked alongside the upcoming M6 coupe and convertible.

The first car is the least surprising, as BMW has already given us the full download on its latest barnstorming executive sedan. Regardless, the M5 is still an exciting proposition: a twin-turbocharged 4.4-liter V-8 pumps out 555 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque. BMW says the car rockets to 62 mph in 4.4 seconds and, with the optional M Driver’s package, can reach a limited top speed of 190 mph.

The M6 will most likely get the same powertrain as the M5, along with that car’s seven-speed M DCT dual-clutch transmission. Fortunately for enthusiasts, American-spec M5s are also slated to be offered with a true three-pedal manual gearbox -- that will probably be the case for the M6, too.

The M6 coupe and convertible are, of course, based upon the 2012 650i convertible, which we have already driven, and the 650i coupe, which debuts this fall. The M6 twins seen here seem to wear the same quad exhaust tips and 19-inch, ten-spoke wheels that are standard on the M5 sedan. Styling-wise, they appear none too different from the M6 we caught undergoing cold-weather testing back in February. As expected, the two-door M cars wear deeper side skirts and larger front air intakes than their plebian 650i forbears.

It’s unknown when BMW will officially reveal the new M6. The 650i convertible bowed long before the coupe version, and we wonder whether the same will prove true of the two M6 body styles. While we wait for an official reveal from BMW, be sure to visit Motor Trend for the full set of spy photos.
