Spied: 2012 Audi A6 Avant Caught in the Snow

Audi revealed its all-new 2012 A6 sedan at the Detroit Auto Show earlier this year, which means a wagon variant can’t be too far behind. Sure enough, Motor Trend managed to capture a disguised next-gen A6 Avant stretching its legs in the snow.

Much like previous-generation A6s, the new sedan and wagon will only vary from one another aft of the B-pillars. Up front, the fascia and fenders are identical to its sedan sibling, but Audi fans will note the wagon receives some steeply raked rear glass. The new design lends the Avant a sportier appearance, but the slick look could potentially diminish its cargo area.

Expect powertrain offerings to mirror the sedan. In Europe, buyers will likely be able to choose from a 2.0-liter turbo-diesel I-4, two iterations of a 3.0-liter turbo-diesel V-6, a 2.8-liter gasoline V-6, and Audi’s superb 3.0-liter supercharged gasoline V-6. Front-wheel-drive models will likely retain a continuously variable transmission, but those blessed with the venerable Quattro all-wheel-drive system may also be paired with an eight-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Audi could potentially pull the wraps off the 2012 A6 Avant next week in Geneva, but we think a Frankfurt debut in September is more likely. Also an unknown is if the Avant is once again U.S.-bound. Should product planners sign off on the product, expect it to be offered here only with the supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 and Quattro.
