We’re somewhat excited by rumors suggesting Porsche may build a hardcore version of its Cayman coupe, patterned roughly after its new, purist 2011 Boxster Spyder model. That said, we’ve never lamented a Cayman S’ performance. Do we really need some additional power and a little less mass?
We’ll argue in favor of a Cayman Clubsport. Both the Boxster and Cayman have long been near and dear to our hearts, largely thanks to some impressive, balanced handling characteristics. Shedding weight and adding nearly 13 horsepower could help make the Cayman a veritable track weapon. Then again, it could also step on the toes of its big brother, the 911.
Pretend, for a moment, you’re a product planner at Porsche. Should Porsche build a Cayman Clubsport? Is there room for a Cayman, Cayman S, and a Cayman Clubsport in the lineup, or would another high-performance Cayman model clutter Porsche’s ever-expanding portfolio?
