As we reported during the Detroit auto show, Smart USA is more interested in selling cars than launching new models. In order to increase the availability of its ForTwo to consumers, it announced new lease plans -- a first for the company in the U.S.
A ForTwo Pure coupe, which normally runs $11,990, qualifies for a 36-month lease for $169 a month. That figure assumes buyers place $999 down, pay a $595 acquisition fee, and pay the first month’s payment at the time of signing. A more upscale version -- the ForTwo Passion -- runs $189 a month, while those hankering for a ForTwo Passion cabriolet will need to shell out $249 a month.
The lease program, provided through Daimler Financial Services, will begin on February 2008 -- coincidentally, nearly two months after Smart USA dumped former president Dave Schembri in favor of Jill Lajdziak, a former Saturn executive. After a successful start in 2008, the brand witnessed a massive 41% sales drop in 2009.
