Today Smart and Nissan signed an agreement to bring a larger Smart to market in late 2011. The vehicle will be based on a Nissan B-segment platform and seat five. This is the first product to emerge from an expanded Daimler-Renault partnership.
While the Smart brand got off to a good start in the U.S., the tiny fortwo hasn't been incredibly popular since gas priced dropped in the past two years. According to Jill Lajdziak, Smart USA president, "there were a lot of customer requests to offer a little bit larger vehicle," and the forthcoming B-segment vehicle will meet that demand.
The bigger Smart hasn't been named yet, though we know it will compete with the likes of the Ford Fiesta, Mazda2, Honda Fit, and ride on Nissan's March/Micra platform. Smart USA spokesman Rick Bourgoise told Reuters the vehicle will be built in the U.S. at a Nissan manufacturing plant.
