Smaller, Faster, Fewer Doors – the 2013 Mini John Cooper Works Paceman

We knew this was coming: Mini has detailed its top-of-the-line crossover, the 2013 John Cooper Works Paceman. Unsurprisingly, the JCW Paceman uses all the same parts as the 2013 JCW Countryman, which means that the hotter two-door crossover will come with 18-inch wheels, all-wheel drive, and 208 hp.

So let's quickly run down the familiar powertrain: a 1.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine pumps out a healthy 208 hp at 6000 rpm and 207 lb-ft of torque at 1700-4500 rpm (or 192 lb-ft at 1850-5600 rpm without overboost). Either a six-speed manual or automatic transmission sends power to all four wheels through Mini's All4 all-wheel drive system. The new JCW Paceman is estimated to achieve 25/31 mpg city/highway with the stick or 23/30 with the auto, hit a top speed of 127 mph, and makes the run from 0 to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds.

Other than the powertrain, there is a raft of changes differentiating the JCW from lesser Paceman models. Most notable are the new standard 18-inch and optional 19-inch alloy wheels, the aggressive aerodynamic kit, and the bold double stripes that run from the grille to the tailgate. Inside are standard sport seats, dark grey gauges, anthracite trim, and red stitching. The JCW Paceman also uses a stiffer sport suspension setup and sits 10 mm lower than models without the sport suspension. Both inside and out are decorated in a smattering of John Cooper Works logos, too.

The 2013 John Cooper Works Paceman will go on sale – along with the other Paceman variants – starting March 16, 2013. Expect pricing information to be announced at the car's official debut at the Detroit auto show in January, but given the $7550 premium for the JCW Countryman, look for a price starting around $36,750.
