At the 1962 New York Auto Show, Carroll Shelby displayed a British sports car with a very American twist. By stuffing a Ford small-block V-8 into an AC Ace, the former racer created an instant icon: the Cobra. To celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of that debut, Shelby American will offer a small batch of 50th Anniversary Edition continuation series Cobras.
“Fifty years after its introduction, the Shelby Cobra is still an international symbol of high performance,” John Luft, president of Shelby American, said in a prepared release. “Combining a robust, powerful American engine with a lightweight European chassis was brilliant. Half a century later, the Cobra remains one of the most coveted cars in the world. Shelby’s formula still resonates today and is followed by automakers worldwide.”
Like some of Shelby’s other modern Cobras, the 50th Anniversary cars -- all patterned after the original, slender 289 Cobra design -- are regarded as continuation series cars, and are given a Shelby serial number, starting with the hallowed “CSX” designation. Although a splitting image of the original, the modern 289 Cobras receive a few modern upgrades (i.e. frame reinforcement, modern disc brakes, etc.), and the 50th Anniversary models are given a handful of special touches to separate them from standard CSX8000-series cars.
Each model will be painted in a special Shelby Black, which goes nicely with the wine-colored interior, which receives plush carpeting and leather-trimmed seats. Predictably, special floor and trunk mats receive embroidered 50th Anniversary logos, matching the specialized emblems placed on the front fenders.
Although the actual anniversary is still a little over a year away, 50th Anniversary Cobras can currently be ordered from Shelby’s official dealers. Buyers can purchase a fiberglass-bodied model for $69,995 (not including the purchase and installation of powertrain), while aluminum bodied cars start at $134,995.
