Shanghai Roundup: What Cars Are Debuting At the 2011 Shanghai Motor Show?

The New York auto show and the Shanghai Motor Show overlap this year, leading many automakers to choose one or the other to unveil their latest creations. Most attention will likely be focused on New York, but that doesn't mean Shanghai is without several significant introductions of its own. Here's a quick rundown of what cars will be popping up in China later this week.

2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Volkswagen is taking a vastly different approach with the unveiling of its all-new 2013 Beetle. Aside from its official Shanghai debut, the car will get a pair of global roll-outs courtesy of MTV World Stage concerts. The Black Eyed Peas will officially introduce the new Bug at a New York-based concert, while European duo 2maydjs will reveal the car in Berlin. Based on what we've seen thus far, the original shape will remain intact, but dimensions will reportedly grow to afford a more spacious cabin.

2013 Chevrolet Malibu

Intentional or not, Chevrolet dropped a full exterior photo of the 2013 Malibu prior to its official debut next week in Shanghai and New York. The global design is a vast departure from the current model, and should help Chevrolet give the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry a run for their money. Production is expected to commence early next year, with an on-sale date shortly thereafter.

BMW 5 Series Plug-in Hybrid, M5 Concept

A pair of BMW 5 Series sedans with vastly different purposes are set to make their debut in China next week. BMW's M5 will make an appearance in concept form at the show next week. Although billed a concept, the show car is an excellent look at what's to come. The production variant is said to be premiering at the Frankfurt show come September. BMW Brilliance Automotive - the German automaker's Chinese arm -- engineered a plug-in hybrid based on the China-only extended-wheelbase 5 Series. The luxury hybrid has been confirmed for Chinese production, and is capable of traveling 47 miles on electricity alone. 2012 Audi Q3

Audi's latest crossover comes bearing the Q3 nameplate. Slotting in below the Q5, Audi's latest Q offering takes direct aim at the new BMW X1. Although set to arrive in Europe this summer, Audi has yet to confirm the crossover for the States.

Mercedes-Benz A-Class Concept

Mercedes has yet to sell its small A-Class hatchback here in the states, but that may soon change. Next week, the German automaker is set to unveil a conceptual preview of its smallest offering in both Shanghai and New York. Despite being billed a concept, the A-Class features sharp lines and a pleasant overall shape. We look forward to further information as it becomes available next week.

Subaru XV Concept

At approximately the same time the 2012 Impreza makes its public debut in New York, Shanghai will get its first glimpse of Subaru's XV concept. Subaru has been fairly coy surrounding the details of its latest concept, save for a shadowy silhouette of the vehicle. We suspect the VX is the new Impreza in hatchback form, but we won't know for sure until next week's unveiling.

Mini Inspired by Goodwood

Mini and Rolls-Royce are both owned by BMW, but few would ever anticipate the two crossing paths until now. The Mini Inspired by Goodwood, which will debut in Shanghai, is essentially a Cooper S but with an interior inspired by the materials found within Rolls-Royce's ultra-luxurious rides.

2012 BMW 6 Series Coupe

We've already seen BMW's new 6 Series in convertible form, but the automaker has yet to reveal the hardtop variant of its new coupe. Shanghai will play host to the coupe's official public debut this week, although we're anxiously awaiting the introduction of the hopped-up M6 model...

Buick Envision SUV Concept

Catering to its number one market, Buick has prepared an SUV concept for the Chinese market. Based on a hybrid powertrain, there's no shortage of technology within. Developed and designed by Shanghai GM for the Chinese market, don't expect to see this Buick here anytime soon (although we do hear a small Buick CUV is planned for North America).
