Seven Shills: Caterham Crafts Special-Edition Seven for Monaco

Without fail, automakers stuck with aging models frequently turn to so-called limited-edition trim packages in hopes of drumming up attention (and sales). It is, however, a little odd to see Caterham Cars turn to such devices, particularly since the company thrives on the fact that its Seven roadster is, more a less, a 50-year-old Lotus design.

No matter. To help remind European buyers that there are Seven models apart from the insane Superlight R500, the firm has a new tape-and-stripe packages built upon its entry-level Seven: the Roadsport 125 Monaco.

Monaco? We typically associate Sevens with blasting through the English countryside, or helping Patrick McGoohan escape his enigmatic captors. Still, Caterham thinks it's high time to pay tribute to the costal country, especially the motorsport heritage linked to the city of Monte Carlo. To do so, the firm takes a stock Roadsport 125, leaves its aluminum body bare (much like the first Lotus Sevens), and accents it with Monaco's national colors. The nosecone and fenders are painted black, while a series of red and white stripes run along both the hood and rocker panels. Inside, seating is covered with black leather hides, which are trimmed with red piping. Apart from the snazzy decor, the Monaco is identical to any other Roadsport 125 model. Motive power comes courtesy of a 1.6-liter I-4 sourced from Ford, which cranks out roughly 125 horsepower. Modest, perhaps, but it's enough to whip the 500-kg car from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds before hitting a top speed of 112 mph. Is the entire package worth roughly $2500 more than a stock Roadsport 125? That's up to buyers, but we can't help thinking those looking for a limited-edition Seven with some extra visual presence will flock to the wild Lambretta model instead. Source: Caterham
