As usual, Scion is going big for the Specialty Equipment Market Association this year, with a trio of tuned tCs, four tuned FR-Ss, and one stretched, pimped-out xB. The FR-S sports coupes and the stretched xB are builds by Scion, while the three 2014 Scion tC coupes are part of a competition called the Scion Tuner Challenge.
This challenge pits custom car builders against each other to try and create their own interpretation of a Scion tC. Scion gave each tuner a stock 2014 Scion tC, $15,000 to modify the car, and 90 days to complete their project. At the SEMA show, a panel of judges, including a representative from Super Street magazine, will decide on a winner to take home the $10,000 grand prize.
The first Scion tC, decked out in hot rod orange, was modified by Josh Croll from Pennsylvania. He went for a clean design with tasteful vents and scoops in the front along with a wider stance and flashy wheels. Croll also converted his Scion tC to right-hand-drive to highlight its Japanese roots, making it the first ever right-hand-drive tC in the world. (The tC is not actually sold in Japan, but parent company Toyota is Japanese.)
Walter Franco from Seattle, in collaboration with California-based DTM Autobody, went for what he calls a VIP look for the Scion tC. He aimed for a luxurious feel with his suede and leather interior and the elegant pearl white exterior color. Franco’s tC also has special diamond stitching on the inside along with an upgraded audio system and a nitrous kit to boost performance.
The last Scion tC is modified by Young Tea from California, known as the co-founder of a popular Scion FR-S community forum. Young Tea set out to build a tC that would be equally competent on the track and as a daily driver. Called the “Simpli-tC” concept, this car has extended fenders, a custom rear diffusor, and an adjustable air suspension to lower the car for shows.
In addition to the three tCs that will be competing for the prize, Scion will show a stretched version of the Scion xB called the Strictly Business Cartel Scion xB. A joint effort between Cartel Customs and Quality Coachworks, this xB receives a stretch treatment and a unique two-tone paint job on the outside. On the inside, there’s a Wi-Fi hotspot and an Apple computer replete with a wireless keyboard and mouse, hence the name “Strictly Business.”
Four tuned Scion FR-S sport coupes will take the stand at SEMA as well, starting off with the Steve Aoki Scion FR-S designed by Aoki himself, a well=known DJ and producer. It has a full mixing station, a custom Pioneer sound system, an LCD display on the trunklid, and a fog machine and strobe lighting to create a party experience around the car.
The next modified FR-S is called the Bulletproof FR-S Concept One by Bulletproof Automotive. On the outside, the body is widened with numerous racing parts like a front splitter and rear spoiler, and on the inside there’s a carbon fiber interior. This FR-S is also modified under the hood, with a turbocharged engine tuned to 500 horsepower and a special track-tuned suspension as well. Despite the name, the car is not actually bulletproof.
The GReddy Performance x Scion Racing Drift FR-S is made especially for drifting, with something called a “Rocket Bunny” aero kit and a turbocharged engine making an insane 750 horsepower. Presumably, this whacked-out FR-S is quite the burnout machine.
The FR-S Style J Urban GT Sport Coupe takes a much more subtle approach with its smooth lines and sophisticated overall package. It has a custom leather interior with special beige stitching and black accents on the interior, and on the outside it displays a modified front end, smoothed-over lines, black wheels, and even cameras replacing the side mirrors.
Look for all of these wild Scion concepts at the SEMA show next week in Las Vegas.
