Same Car, New Price: 2012 Nissan Versa Hatchback Starts at $15,140

Nissan has just introduced pricing for its 2012 Versa subcompact hatchback, coming in $15,140 including the $760 destination charge. The 2012 Versa hatch is not, however, an\ all-new model like the sedan, but simply a carryover model from the 2011 model year. An all-new Versa hatch will make its appearance sometime next year.

The 2012 Versa hatchback is available in two trim levels: the $15,140 1.8 S and the $19,150 1.8 SL, both with a 1.8-liter inline-four producing 122 hp and 127 lb-ft of torque. The 1.8 S comes with the choice of a six-speed manual or a four-speed automatic (a $1000 option), and the 1.8 SL comes only with Nissan’s continuously variable transmission. The 2012 Versa hatchback is rated as high as 28/34 mpg city/highway when equipped with the CVT.

Now standard across the Versa range is vehicle dynamic control, and the 1.8 SL sees last year’s premium package content -- which included keyless entry and ignition, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, Bluetooth hands-free system, and 16-inch aluminum wheels -- lumped in as standard equipment. Both trim levels offer a $700 navigation package, which is new to the 1.8 S.

The lower trimalso gains three other new option packages: a convenience package ($700), a 15-inch alloy wheel package ($470), and a “Special Edition” package that combines the navigation, convenience, and wheels packages for $770. Also available from the factory are splash guards ($125) and a so-called plus package for the 1.8 S that includes cruise control and remote keyless entry for $500.

The 2012 Versa hatchback is already available on dealership lots, and will be joined by the all-new sedan later this summer.

This makes absolutely no sense to me. I sell Nissans and I find it ridiculous that they would launch an all new sedan without changing the hatchback. I personally prefer the old body style so I'm glad the hatch remains unchanged but this is going to look stupid on the lot. A 2012 Versa next to another 2012 Versa but they look nothing alike.
