In July, V-6-equipped F-150 models outsold V-8s for the third consecutive month. EcoBoost V-6 models made up 40 percent of all F-150 models sold, while base models with 3.7-liter V-6s accounted for 16 percent. This streak of V-6 sales marks the first time a six-cylinder has bested a V-8 in sales of the F-150 since 1985.
A total of 49,104 F-150 models were sold during the month of July, bringing Ford’s year-to-date sales for the truck to 313,183 units for a gain of 8 percent over last year. The F-150 EcoBoost, with its twin-turbocharged V-6 engine, made the biggest gains among Ford’s six-cylinder trucks, comprising 40 percent of all F-150 models sold. In addition, Ford says the twin-turbo six-cylinder F-150 is the volume leader of the company’s global EcoBoost range, which includes European models with turbocharged four-cylinder engines as well as the V-6 we get here. The U.S. will get its own four-cylinder EcoBoost engines when the 2.0-liter EcoBoost I-4 arrives in the Edge crossover and Explorer SUV this fall.
Combined, the F-150’s two V-6 offerings made up 79.5 percent of the full-sized V-6 truck market in July – with the next runner-up, the Chevy Silverado, managing only 12.1 percent market share. In third place was the GMC Sierra with 4 percent, followed by the Dodge Ram with 3.5 percent. According to Ford’s data, Toyota’s full-sized V-6 truck offering barely registered in July, with the Tundra coming in last place at 0.9 percent.
“Both of our V-6 powerplants are changing the way customers think about truck engines,” said Ford truck group marketing manager Doug Scott. “The 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6 engine…is in a class of its own – no one has anything even remotely closed to this engine...”
The F-150 EcoBoost ‘s 365 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque easily makes it one of the quicker models in the F-150 line. That power also makes towing a strong point for the engine, allowing it to haul up to 11,300 lbs. Carrying an EPA rating of 16/22 mpg, the EcoBoost is also the fuel economy leader of the range. With numbers like these, it’s really no surprise the EcoBoost is outselling the V-8 models.
