This week's Rumors Video Roundup goes around the world, from Evo's look at the Ford Fiesta rally car, to Motor Trend's acoustic version of the World's Greatest Drag Race, and Arthur St. Antoine going for an Epic Drive in a Lamborghini Aventador Roadster.
Carlos Lago takes a look at some recent icons of Mercedes-Benz AMG performance, and the president of Volvo Trucks shows his confidence in his product by suspending one by crane over the water. Watch these highlights and much more on this week's Rumors Video Roundup!
Some motorsports series have never had the pretense of having any relation to production cars, but two of the biggest ones in the United States, NASCAR and NHRA, had their origins in “stock” car racing, with at least nominally production-based models duking it out at the quarter-mile or oval track. Over time, these cars evolve into cars that can barely be considered street-legal or in any way “stock.” Hot Rod has worked to keep the grass-roots spirit alive by introducing successive series requiring competitors to use publicly-available pump gas, and most recently with Hot Rod Drag Week, bringing their own spare parts and supplies on-board their vehicle between races, or towed by the car on a trailer.
It seems there are some cars that almost everyone has a story relating to. Some of the models that come to mind are the Volkswagen Beetle, the Ford Mustang, and surprisingly often, the Toyota Corolla. Going on more than 45 years of production, the Corolla has been part of people’s lives for decades. To commemorate the ubiquity of its compact model through the ages, Toyota produced this one-minute YouTube video showing five generations of the Corolla.
Audi is hoping to educate Americans on the virtues of modern diesels in a double-barreled offensive showing the economy of new diesels, as well as challenging perceptions showing a modern, upscale diesel sedan in a new ad spot. Starting this weekend, a two-car team consisting of a 2014 Audi A6 and A7 TDI, followed by a Q5 TDI as a support vehicle, will make the coast-to-coast trek on just four tanks as part of the “Truth in 48″ challenge, with the goal of completing the trip in less than 48 hours.
For some, the ultimate road trip car might be a Chevrolet Suburban or a Mercedes-Benz S-Class. But when the roads are curvy and mountainous, and cost is no object, why not go big? That’s exactly what Motor Trend’s Arthur St. Antoine decided when he took the 2013 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster to Montana to enjoy some of the state’s epic natural beauty, as well as stretch the legs of Lamborghini’s ultimate raging bull.
How best to demonstrate the strength of your new commercial truck? Volvo Trucks president Claes Nilsson chose to literally put it all on the line in a new video promoting the Volvo FMX truck range. The video shows Nilsson standing atop a Volvo FMX truck, which is suspended from a crane in the port of Gothernberg, Sweden.
It’s not every day you see a full-blown rally car driving down the road, but that’s what happens in this Evo video featuring a Ford Fiesta R5 rally car made by Ford’s longtime rally partner, M-Sport. The Ford Fiesta R5 is an all new rally car by M-Sport that is based on the Ford Fiesta ST hot hatch. As the first R5 specification car for the new R5 class of the World Rally Championships, the Fiesta R5 was designed almost completely from scratch.
In the U.S., the Black Series range of hardcore Mercedes-Benz AMG models all started with the 2008 Mercedes-Benz CLK63 AMG Black Series. The CLK Black Series was essentially an F1 pace car made for the road, and featured a 500-hp 6.2-liter V-8 along with aggressive-looking aerodynamic modifications and a hardcore, track-ready suspension to set it apart from the standard CLK63 AMG.
Our friends at Motor Trend have staged another epic drag race, and their most recent 12-car battle was the biggest yet with a combined 82 cylinders, 5171 hp, 4144 lb-ft of torque, and a total vehicle cost of $1,686,294. Now, that drag race is presented with nothing but natural engine sounds providing the soundtrack in this episode of Wide Open Throttle.
