If Mitsubishi's global product planner, Gayu Eusegi, has his facts straight (given his company role, we have no reason to believe he doesn't), the automaker's much loved Lancer Evolution X will be no more.
Eusegi mentioned at this week's Geneva Motor Show that the automaker's main focus is to produce fuel efficient and alternatively fueled vehicles like the upcoming Global Small Car Concept, not relatively expensive high performance niche rides.
Evidence of this EV ramp up has emerged over the past few months. Executives in Japan recently announced their company would release at least 8 PHEV or EV models by 2015. Last December, Mitsubishi's German officials said all future cars will be engineered to accommodate for electric powertrains. And this January, suits outlined a future three-diamond brand without Galant, Endeavour, and Eclipse models.
But the Lancer Evolution moniker may one day return, Eusegi said.
"Yes. Maybe the world can change, and maybe someday we can do a motor race by electric vehicles," said Eusegi to Autocar. "Maybe then we can enter the market again."
Company suits around the world were taken aback by Eusegi's words. In the North America, Mitsubishi issued this statement in response to the news:
"The current model Lancer Evolution is planned for sale through the 2012 and 2013 model years in the US market. At this time, we cannot comment on the model years beyond that time frame."
What do you think of a Mitsubishi without the Lancer Evolution?
