Rumored: McLaren MP4-12C Spider Gets Unique Folding Hardtop

When some mid-engine supercars are converted into drop-tops, the sleek and swoopy profile is lost in translation. McLaren hopes to avoid that with its new folding hard top on the upcoming MP4-12C Spider.

Based on leaked patent drawings and a spied prototype, Autocar believes the McLaren MP4-12C Spider will use a three-piece folding hard top when it debuts later this year. Instead of folding backwards over the engine bay, the roof stacks on top of itself, and then folds into the cabin behind the two seats, preserving the MP4-12C's shape.

In order to save weight, the roof will likely be made of carbon fiber or aluminum. The system was developed by the same German company responsible for the Ferrari 458 Italia Spider's folding hard top.

The McLaren MP4-12C Spider will be the second of three MP4-12C configurations when it joins the hardtop later this year. The third MP4-12C will be a track-oriented version similar to Ferrari's Scuderia models.
