Rumored: Mazda to Drop V-6 in 2014 Mazda6

Mazda plans to bring the all-new 2014 Mazda6 to showrooms in the first quarter of 2013 without the current car's available V-6 engine, Automotive News reports. The news comes as the auto industry is seeing a shift to more efficient and downsized powertrains in midsize sedans.

Earlier this month we reported from the New York auto show that Mazda would use the Skyactiv-G gasoline engine (from the Mazda3 i and CX-5) mated to a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, but the automaker hadn’t mention whether a V-6 engine was in the cards.

Mazda spokesman Jeremy Barnes tells us that while there is no current plan for a 2014 Mazda6 V-6, we shouldn't rule out that possibility for the future. Barnes also reiterated that Mazda still plans to bring the Skyactiv diesel to North America, but couldn’t confirm which vehicle would receive it. At a Mazda CX-5 driving event, company representatives indicated that the crossover’s chassis and engines were developed together for a more integrated package.

The third-generation Mazda6 will incorporate the full suite of Mazda Skyactiv technologies including a lightweight, sporty chassis, Skyactiv direct-injected 2.0-liter gas four-cylinder, and more efficient six-speed automatic and manual transmissions. The Mazda6 will also adopt the Kodo design language and will likely resemble a toned-down version of the Takeri concept car pictured here.

Mazda will also move production of the Mazda6 from the AutoAlliance International plant in Flat Rock, Michigan (shared with Ford) to its plant in Hiroshima, Japan.

Build a wagon variant! And sell it in the US!!! I am BEGGING you, Mazda. I LOVE my '04 Mazda6 wagon, but it won't last forever. I love Mazdas, but I must have a wagon, if you don't build one...
Mazda will use the electric motor of the Prius licensed to Toyota in this Mazda 6. It will be the first Mazda Hybrid car using a new electric Supercharger with the 2.0L Skyactiv engine. Also the i-Stop and i-Eloop technologies will be on it. I am waiting for this car, my Mazda 3 2012 is excellently efficient saving gas, but a bigger car is calling me.
Unless MAZDA drops the 2.3t from the mazdaspeed 3 in it then its Zoom Zoom time again!
Sideways the Seven
