Rumored: Euro-Spec Honda Accord May be Discontinued in U.K.

When it comes to U.S.-spec midsize sedans, the Honda Accord is almost always near the top of the best-sellers list. In the U.K., however, the European-spec Accord – a four-door we get here as the Acura TSX – is a small blip in Honda’s sales numbers and the automaker has no “concrete plan” to release a new model, Autocar suggests.

The report cites a number of reasons why European Accord sales in the country have slipped from about 10,000 per year to about 2500. For comparison, 2602 Acura TSXs were sold in June 2012, including 397 TSX wagons. In the U.K., an increasing number of British consumers are downsizing to smaller cars to save gas and avoid rising CO2-based taxes. Those not worried about fuel costs are showing more interest in crossovers like the locally produced CR-V.

The European Accord is one of few remaining models still imported into the U.K. from Japan, which means Honda faces the same profitability issues it does with cars it imports to the U.S. Autocar states that 93 percent of Honda’s sold in the U.K. are produced within the country. While the European Accord may not have a future in the U.K., that doesn’t necessarily mean the car won’t have a more positive outlook elsewhere in Europe. The Accord currently competes with the four-doors like the Ford Mondeo and Hyundai i40 in the U.K.’s midsize sedan market.

This report about the European Accord comes a few months after rumors surfaced regarding the future of the Acura TSX in the U.S. The TSX, essentially a rebadged version of the Euro-spec Accord, now shares the showroom with the smaller and less expensive ILX compact sedan. The TSX currently outsells the ILX by 2 to 1, but that could change if the ILX catches on with U.S. consumers. The TL, which is currently the brand’s best-selling sedan, may continue on as the TLX, following Acura’s three-lettered nomenclature pattern.
