Rumored: Diesel Coming to Chevrolet Colorado, Not Silverado 1500

The 2014 Ram 1500 will soon have a diesel-powered variant in showrooms, but a new report suggests that the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 may not become a direct competitor. Motor Trend says that Chevrolet fans' hopes for a diesel truck in the U.S. rest with the upcoming Colorado.

We already know the Colorado is offered with 2.5- and 2.8-liter turbodiesels in other markets, and we're guessing that if the U.S.-spec Colorado gets any diesel, it'll be the larger one with 324-346 lb-ft of torque, depending on whether you go for the manual or automatic transmission.

A Colorado diesel wouldn't be the only new Chevrolet diesel offered by U.S. dealers -- the 2014 Cruze diesel goes after Volkswagen Jetta TDI buyers later this year. Though we still haven't heard full powertrain details on the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500, for now it appears diesel will continue to be available only on the heavy-duty models.

Entries in the compact/midsize truck segment are getting old, meaning a diesel-powered Chevrolet alternative might really shake up the segment. Would you rather see a diesel-powered Colorado or Silverado 1500? Tell us what you think below.

I would love to see diesel engine options made available for the upcoming Colorado and/or Canyon pickups. A small diesel should provide better MPGs along with great low-end torque.

Given that i like driving my GF's Tacoma around town better than my Silverado  (if you've driven both,  back and fourth to work or around an urban environment, or you filed the gas tank.  you know what i'm talking about )But The Tacoma doesn't tow my 4 wheelers nearly as good as my silverado   IF THAT COLORADO GETS A DIESEL I'LL BE FIRST IN LINE TO BUY ONE.!

A diesel engine should be reserved for the Sierra. GMC customers are more willing to dole out the extra bucks for upgrades.
