Report: Volkswagen, Skoda Planning Electric Versions of Up!, Citigo

Just as parent Volkswagen plans to build an electric version of the Up! hatchback, Skoda also will produce a zero-emissions version of the Up!-based Citigo city car. According to Auto Bild, the e-Citigo will launch in 2014, about a year after the VW e-Up! goes on sale. Skoda announced its version of the Volkswagen Up! last September after the VW variant was shown at the Frankfurt Motor Show. The Up! is now on sale across Europe; the Citigo has launched in the Czech Republic and will be sold across Europe from this summer. Both the Skoda and VW are currently offered with 1.0-liter three-cylinder engines producing 60 hp and 75 hp depending on trim. The announcement about the e-Citigo came from Skoda yesterday. The company revealed the plans for the electric city car as it announced a test fleet of ten electric-powered Octavia station wagons. Both the e-Citigo and VW e-Up! will use an 18-kWh battery pack and an 80-hp electric motor. That should enable a driving range of about 81 miles and a maximum speed of 81 mph. The Volkswagen e-Up! goes on sale in 2013, and the Skoda e-Cigito will arrive by 2014. Volkswagen has previously characterized its proposed electric city car as “the Beetle of the 21st century.” Concept versions (pictured) show slightly softer, more aerodynamic fascias than the regular Up!, along with unique bracket-shaped LED running lights at the front. Volkswagen won’t sell the gasoline-powered Up! in the U.S., and so far there are no confirmed plans for the electron-fired e-Up! to arrive on our shores. However, given that Volkswagen displayed the e-Bugster concept at this week’s Detroit auto show and may bring an electric Golf hatchback here in the future, would it make sense for the e-Up! to be sold in America?
