For years, the internet has been abuzz about the possibility of a Toyota Supra successor, with rumors flying especially after the introduction of the Toyota GT 86 that was developed in conjunction with Subaru. If a recent interview with Toyota USA Sales CEO Kazuo Ohara is any indication, a new Supra is a definite possibility for Toyota as it tries to bolster its sporting image with more exciting products like the GT 86.
In the Bloomberg interview, Ohara says, "We have several options to think about. I have yet to confirm, but we have several options and Supra is one of the options.” Earlier this year, Toyota chairman Takeshi Uchiyamada made a similar comment, saying that he hoped that BMW and Toyota’s new partnership to develop a lightweight sports car (in addition to hydrogen technology) would result in a midsize sports car resurrecting the Supra name. Uchiyamada reportedly expressed his interest in making this jointly developed sports car into a distinct model from the smaller Toyota GT 86 in order to ensure that the new car lives up to the Supra name.
The Toyota Supra was Toyota’s flagship sports car model sold in the U.S. from 1978 until 1999. The last generation Supra was viewed by many as the most iconic, with its available 320 hp, twin-turbo six-cylinder engine which made for brisk performance.
Reports from earlier this year suggest that the new Supra will likely be based on the same platform as the next BMW Z4, with power coming from either a BMW-sourced turbocharged engine or a hybrid drivetrain, possibly with front-wheel electric motors which could endow the rear-wheel-drive sports car with all-wheel drive. Styling for the new Supra could be inspired by the Toyota FT-HS hybrid sports car concept from 2007.
Look for another Toyota concept previewing the Supra to potentially make its debut debut at this year’s Tokyo Motor Show in November. We can’t wait to see how his project shakes out in the near future.
