Report: TMG to become Toyota Performance Division?

For years, Toyota has been trying to shed its dull image in favor of a more exciting lineup. The introduction of the Toyota GT 86 and Scion FR-S twins was a step in this direction, and now the Japanese brand is reportedly considering adding a performance line for existing Toyota and Lexus models, Toyota Europe executive vice president Karl Schlicht told Auto Express.

This comes on the heels of the reveal of the Toyota Yaris Hybrid-R concept from the 2013 Frankfurt Motor Show, a 300 hp version of the Yaris that uses a hybrid powertrain similar to that in Toyota’s TS030 race cars. Schlicht told AE that future models like this could possibly wear a TMG badge, which stands for Toyota Motorsport GmbH.

TMG produces all of Toyota’s race cars and has previously produced a high-powered version of the Lexus LS luxury sedan called the TMG Sport 650. This one-off creation was powered by a modified, twin-turbo 5.0-liter V-8 producing 640 hp and 564 lb-ft of torque. The AE report, though, speculates that potential TMG vehicles would more likely follow the route of the Hybrid-R due to Toyota’s long leadership in the hybrid sector and experience with performance hybrid drivetrains in its racing division.

We’ve previously reported on TMG president Yoshiaki Konishita’s intentions to create a Mercedes AMG-like relationship between Toyota and TMG, and if AE’s report is any indication then we may be seeing Toyota and Lexus performance models in the near future.
