Report: No 2014 Chevrolet SS for Canada

General Motors may have finally appeased enthusiasts for the death of the Pontiac G8 with the 2014 Chevrolet SS, but only U.S. buyers will be able to pick up the new sports sedan. According to a new report, Chevy won't sell the SS to our northern neighbors in Canada.

Toronto-based The Globe and Mail is reporting that GM has decided against selling the SS sedan in the northern North American country. A representative for the automaker's Canadian arm told us that the SS won't be making it across the border because the large, rear-wheel drive sedan market is too small, and that Chevrolet already "has the mid-to-large sedan segment covered with the Malibu and Impala." When asked if customer demand could reverse the decision, we were simply told that "There are no current plans to offer the SS in Canada."

Looking at Canadian sales numbers from 2012, the Chrysler 300 – a large, rear-wheel drive sedan – outsold the Chevrolet Malibu 5760 sales to 5697, and the Dodge Charger trailed the Malibu by 1639 sales. The outgoing Impala, on the other hand, moved 7733 units in Canada last year and the rear-wheel drive Hyundai Genesis sold just 2979 copies, so maybe Chevy's product planners are onto something.

We feel bad for our Canadian enthusiast readers who will be missing out on being able to get the 6.2-liter LS3 V-8 in a four-door sedan; granted it is a 415-hp, 415-lb-ft sedan. Chevrolet is estimating a 0-to-60-mph (that's 0-to-97-kph up north) in just five seconds, with the thrust going through a six-speed automatic to the rear wheels.

Canada also missed out on another Australian import, the Pontiac GTO revival, from 2004 to 2006. If it's any kind of consolation, Canada does get two models we don't: the Orlando people-mover and the Trax subcompact crossover.

As a Canadian, I am very disturbed by the decision taken by GM. My wife was so shocked, that, in a moment of furious rage, she left me for my business partner. Worse yet, my son, reacting in a rather odd way, has decided to become a female tennis player. So, in a desperate act of protest, I sold my Impala, my Malibu, my Chrysler 300 and put the money on a 1963 Trabant. GM, I hope you are finally satisfied. At least we have Red Rose tea. What do you Yanks have? Tetley. Enough said.
