Report: Next Infiniti G Sports Car to Debut At Geneva Show In 2013

Infiniti will introduce the next version of its G coupe and sedan sports car at the Geneva Motor Show in March 2013. Autocar reports that Infiniti officials have confirmed the Geneva debut, and promise the new G will be "much sportier and more dynamic" than the current model. It's no big surprise that a new Infiniti G is in the pipeline, although until now we didn’t know when it would break cover. We previously heard that the new coupe and sedan would launch in summer 2014. The Japanese automaker had finalized the body design for the new car by June 2011, and it will share its platform with the next Mercedes-Benz C-Class. (Recall that Infiniti parent Nissan has a partnership with Mercedes-Benz parent company Daimler.) However, we're told that the new car will be approximately the same size as the current G37 (pictured), albeit with a four-inch lower roofline and the graceful four-door coupe taper shape that we've seen on so many new cars. Infiniti will continue to offer a coupe and a sedan. There will be a new version of the company's VQ V-6 engine, but new heads and direct fuel injection will improve performance significantly. For American-market cars, that engine will likely be built at one of Nissan's factories in Tennessee to hedge against the Yen-Dollar exchange rate. Importing engines from Japan has proven unprofitable for Infiniti in the past. Also on the table is a 2.1-liter turbodiesel from Mercedes, and a V-6 hybrid powertrain. The diesel, however, is unlikely to be sold in Japan and the U.S., where oil-burners are traditionally unpopular. At the top of the model range, Infiniti plans a so-called "Super G" that will be somewhat similar to the Nissan GT-R. The car will have a hand-built, twin-turbocharged 3.7-liter V-6 producing about 530 hp. The engine will be assembled at the same Tochigi factory responsible for the GT-R's twin-turbo 3.8-liter V-6. Infiniti reportedly plans for its "Super G" to take on Germany's performance-coupe mainstays, the BMW M3 and the Mercedes-Benz C63 AMG. Expect pricing around $100,000. The styling of the new Infiniti G is said to be inspired by the Etherea concept that broke cover at the 2011 Geneva Motor Show. Company insiders promise the new car will be both sportier and more luxurious than the current model. We'll know for sure once Infiniti pulls the wraps off its new coupe and sedan at the Geneva show next spring. Source: Autocar
