The current NC-generation Mazda MX-5 Miata has been on sale since 2005 and will continue on for a few more years before an all-new fourth-gen car makes an appearance. But worry not, Mazda isn't letting its fun-to-drive roadster languish: the Miata will be getting a facelift for 2013.
The MX-5 OC Forum managed to get their hands on brochure scans for the Japanese-market car, showing off the updated front fascia, new wheels, and updated safety tech. A Mazda representative wouldn't confirm if the images are the real deal, but did tell us that the 2013 MX-5 Miata will indeed gain a revised front end inspired by the 2011 MX-5 Spyder Concept (pictured below), and replace the Touring trim level with a new “Club” trim. For more information and official images, we’ll have to sit tight until after the summer.
Knowing that the 2013 Miata should looks like the Spyder Concept validates these pictures – the Miata gains a closer familial tie to the updated 2012 Mazda3 with a less-smiley grille and larger fog light surrounds, just like the concept car. The leaked brochure scans also show the MX-5 equipped with a pop-up hood for pedestrian safety, no doubt to meet stricter European safety regulations. There is also a new wheel design that carries over from this year's Special Edition model that we had also seen on the Spyder Concept.
We expect this update is purely cosmetic, meaning the 2013 MX-5 Miata should soldier on with the same 167-hp, 2.0-liter I-4 engine and transmission choices (either a five- or six-speed manual or a six-speed automatic) as before. The brochure shows both soft-top and power-retractable-hardtop versions will also be available for 2013. The 2012 Mazda MX-5 Miata currently starts at $24,265 with destination.
