Report: Mazda Planning Smaller CX-3 Crossover for 2014

Is Mazda looking to ride the coattails of the successful 2013 CX-5 crossover? If this new report is accurate, the Japanese automaker will be expanding its lineup with a new, smaller SUV based on the subcompact Mazda 2. At just 155.5 inches long, the Mazda 2 will make for quite a tiny crossover; for reference, the Mazda-3-based CX-5 (pictured) is 179.3 inches long. AutoExpress reports that the upcoming crossover will wear the CX-3 moniker, but may be a Euro-only affair due to its diminutive size. Expect a slew of Skyactiv chassis and powertrain components, including two new engines: a 1.6-liter diesel able to achieve around 80 mpg on the European cycle and an all-new, gas 1.3-liter turbo four. AE says that the CX-3 may end up with only front-wheel drive because two-wheel-drive small crossovers apparently outsell their all-wheel-drive siblings in Europe. If AE is correct, the CX-3 should go on sale in Europe by the end of 2014 with a price tag around £13,000 (about $21,000). The little Mazda crossover won't be alone in the subcompact-crossover class in Europe: the Chevrolet Trax and Opel Mokka both go on sale next year, Fiat already offers the jacked-up Panda 4x4, and Ford has plans to bring the tiny EcoSport to Europe in the near future. Our diminutive SUV options aren't as plentiful in the States, as we only have the 2013 Buick Encore that goes on sale next month. Would you want the smaller Mazda CX-3 here, or is it too small to be successful in the U.S.? Let us know in the comments section. Source: AutoExpress

Better use for the investment would be a new 10 speed auto..or a new mazda 5 minimini van, or Better yet a real replacement for my beloved CX9..not just a cosmetic job but a true skyyactiv makeover.
I would say bring it, but then, I'm one of the very few with a Mazda5.
Would think a 'smaller' CUV would not sell well here in the U.S..   Better investment would be to get the FIESEL into the CX-5 as soon as possible.   That would add new sales to the CX-5, and not cut into sales of the gas powered SkyActive models.   Will put deposit on manual trans, 2.2 Diesel as soon as you offer it.   No interest at all in a gas version.
