Report: Kia's Lineup May Include RWD GT, Juke-Like Crossover

Kia is considering two exciting new additions to its global fleet, Autocar has learned. A B-segment crossover and a rear-drive halo sports car could be in the automaker's future, Kia Europe's COO Michael Cole said in the report.

While neither project has been officially approved, the comments again point to Kia’s goals of expansion. The 2014 Kia Cadenza sedan will arrive in U.S. dealerships before long, the Cross GT concept gives us a sneak peek at a three-row crossover, and rumors remain that the automaker’s full-size rear-drive sedan might be headed our way, as well.

Cole noted that Kia design chief Peter Schreyer is looking at “a halo sports car,” and that “he’s keen on a GT.” The Kia GT concept debuted at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show, reminding us of premium cars that emphasize design, like the Mercedes-Benz CLS-Class and Audi A7.

Just as interesting, Cole confirmed what some already suspected: the Provo concept may preview a B-segment crossover from Kia that could be based on the Rio. With Toyota also rumored to be jumping into the subcompact-based crossover segment and Honda previewing its Fit-based entry with the Urban SUV concept, the compact SUV segment may soon have serious competition from even smaller SUVs.

Ultimately, though, even if a rear-drive four-door GT car like the GT concept or a compact SUV inspired by the Provo concept gets approved, they may never reach the U.S. Should Kia approve a halo sports car or a Rio-based SUV?
