Hotter Chevrolet Cruze SS Could Be on the Way

Could there be a Chevrolet Cruze SS on the way? It’s been reported that if General Motor’s Australian subsidiary Holden has its way, there will be one for sure.

Holden is hoping to mimic Mazda’s lineup with the Mazda3 and Mazdaspeed3 and Volkswagen’s Golf/Jetta and GTI/GLI by offering sedan, hatchback, and high-performance variants; we already know that there is a five-door version of the Cruze on its way to certain markets, While this isn’t the first time we’ve heard about a hotter Cruze, this is the first time that we’re hearing about the use of the storied SS badge.

Right now top-spec Cruze models in both the U.S. and Australia use a 138-horsepower 1.4-liter turbocharged I-4. It is rumored that the hotter Cruze SS could use the turbocharged 1.6-liter I-4 from the Opel Astra, which produces 177 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque, or creating a Cruze HSV, using the 286-horsepower, twin-scroll turbocharged four-cylinder from the recently unveiled Astra OPC The Cruze and Astra share the same Delta II architecture, so it is theoretically possible to see any of the powertrain options from the Astra appear in the Cruze.

Right now there are no plans to bring the Cruze hatchback to the U.S. and a high-performance Cruze sounds like it may make it off of Australian shores, if it even sees the light of day. What do you say -- would you want to see a Cruze SS here in the U.S.? Sound off in the comments below.

The much larger company pool vehicle that I reserved last week had to go in for unexpected maintenance. I literally groaned when I discovered that in it's place I had a new Chevy Cruze waiting for me. I then had the absolute pleasure to spend about 1,300 miles behind the wheel. I am so impressed by this car - It seems to really be screwed together nicely. The interior quality is quite good, the seats are very good. I loved it so much I'm considering buying one. A hot engine Mazdaspeed level version would certainly make that decision for me. Excellent Idea - Excellent Car.
Hell yes. Do it!
