Last year, we reported that the GMC Granite concept from the 2010 Detroit auto show was headed into production, but that news was later refuted by General Motors. A little over a year after the concept made its debut, our friends at Motor Trend have apparently now learned from a well-placed GM source that the concept is indeed headed into production.
When the Granite was rolled out at last year’s Detroit auto show, it quickly became a favorite of both the press and public alike. The design, which attempted to blend the lines between hot hatch and crossover, featured an engaging design, which featured unusual rear-hinged rear doors and no B-pillars. Those same suicide-style doors apparently have survived the jump into the real world, MT’s source couldn’t confirm the absence of a B-pillar. Our best guess is that the load-bearing structures are key to meeting side-impact regulations.
Like the concept, the production Granite will ride upon GM’s Delta II platform, which is also used in the Chevrolet Cruze, Orlando, and Volt, the Buick Verano, and the Opel Astra. According to MT, the Granite will actually share the Orlando’s floorpan, which may explain why GM has refrained from porting the European peoplemover to the U.S.
Like the concept, power may be provided by the same 138-horsepower, turbocharged 1.4-liter I-4 used in the Cruze, albeit with a different transmission. Officials claimed the concept car used a six-speed dual-clutch transmission, but the production model may utilize a conventional six-speed automatic.
According to MT, we should see the Granite hit assembly lines no earlier than late 2012, and ultimately roll into showrooms for the 2013 or 2014 model year. GM has yet to officially comment on the story, so here’s hoping we do see a production Granite -- and here’s hoping GM finds a way to push the nifty pickup variant into production as well.
