General Motors recently revealed the new generation of its full size SUVs, and a report from Automotive News claims that special off-road versions of these SUVs could be down the road in the near future.
A Z71 off-road suspension packageis currently available on the 2014 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2014 Chevrolet Suburban, and 2014 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL models and includes skid plates, 18-inch wheels and special off-road tires, a slightly changed front fascia, and off-road tuned springs and shocks. Yet the SUVs could soon add a more off-road oriented version altogether.
According to AN, GM’s chief engineer for trucks Jeff Luke hinted that a separate off-road model could be in the works for the new 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe and Suburban and 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Luke said that the Z71 package has not sold well, but that owners are interested in the off-road readiness of these big SUVs.
“They look at this vehicle as more off-road capable than crossovers,” Luke told AN. The 2015 GM full-size SUVs continue to be based on the body-on-frame platform shared with the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickup trucks.
The 2015 Chevrolet Silverado, 2015 Chevrolet Tahoe, 2015 GMC Yukon, and 2015 GMC Yukon XL will go on sale in early 2014. The SUVs are completely redesigned, with new interiors, updated exterior styling, and the updated V-8 powertrain lineup from the GM pickups, including a 5.3-liter V-8 as standard and a 6.2-liter V-8 available in the 2015 GMC Yukon and Yukon XL. Luke also told AN that this generation of SUVs will receive more periodic enhancements along the lifecycle, with a possibility of an eight-speed transmission in the future.
