Report: Chevrolet Impala Limited Continues In Fleets Until 2016

2013 Chevrolet Impala LT

Chevrolet’s fleet-only Impala Limited, which survived even though there is an all-new customer-oriented Impala for 2014, will continue to be sold until 2016, according to Automotive News. Consistent with GM’s plans to extend production on its Oshawa, Ontario-based consolidated line to 2016, the Impala Limited will live on about two years beyond its previously expected demise.

The all-new 2014 Chevrolet Impala is fresh from the ground up, with a fully-redesigned exterior and more comfortable, modern interior. The Impala Limited, however, is identical to Chevrolet's outgoing model that was sold until 2013. It was originally meant to be sold to rental fleets for just one year once the new car was launched. GM aims for the redesigned 2014 Chevrolet Impala, sold to individual buyers, to constitute 70 percent of total Impala sales — a major increase from recent years in which customer purchases of the Impala made up just one-third of Impala sales.

Given how impressive the new 2014 Chevrolet Impala is, the decision to continue selling the Impala Limited might seem counter-intuitive. While the 2014 model is brand new and finally allows the Impala to break from the previous W-body platform, the Impala Limited lingers on with a design Chevrolet introduced in 2006. The basic W-body platform itself will be nearly 30 years old come 2016.

"The Impala Limited has done extremely well. Our fleet customers know the car and like it," GM spokesman Chad Lyons told Automotive News. "It's a business opportunity that we want to continue to fulfill."

If the 2014 Chevrolet Impala Limited accounts for just 30 percent of Impala sales, as GM hopes, it should generate a solid amount of revenue at an extremely low cost, since the original investment on the old platform has long since paid for itself. Sales for the 2014 Chevrolet Impala are down 14 percent year-over-year to 121,033 units through September, although GM doesn't separate sales figures for the 2014 Impala and the Impala Limited.
