Report: Cadillac Stops ATS Manual Production to Fix Transmission

Ask a Cadillac CTS-V owner what their favorite thing about the car is (besides its 556-hp V-8 engine), and you'll likely get a few comments about its manual transmission. But what about the other stick-shift Caddy? Motor Trend reports production of the manual-equipped 2013 Cadillac ATS 2.0T cars has temporarily halted so engineers can fix a few issues they’ve uncovered with the gearbox.

The Cadillac ATS will sell mostly automatic-transmission models--like every sport sedan against which it competes--but Cadillac did get some approving nods from auto enthusiasts when it announced earlier this year that the ATS would have an available six-speed manual transmission when equipped with the new 2.0-liter, turbocharged I-4 engine. That 272-hp, six-speed package aims its competitive energies straight at BMW's 328i, which has a 240-horsepower 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 and a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic.

Early reviews of the ATS 2.0T were mostly positive, although we reported that the manual transmission in the ATS was a major reason behind the car losing to the 328i in Motor Trend's Head 2 Head video comparison. Automobile senior editor Joe Lorio said that "a hurried third-to-second downshift sometimes had the lever missing the second-gear gate and heading off in the direction of reverse."

While we're not exactly sure what will happen to the car, Motor Trend reports that engineers are working on softer linkage bushings and hope to rush a fix before the manual car reaches customers . Presently, only automatic ATS models are on sale, and the involved press cars may have been pre-production testers. Production of automatic-transmission ATS models, predictably, is unaffected by this situation
