Report: BMW May Add Hotter M35i to Z4 Range

BMW has really capitalized on its capital M moniker in recent years. Along with announcing the X5 M and X6 M SUVs, the brand has also added the M Performance sub-brand, and the Z4 roadster could be the next to get an M-spec sub-model.

Sadly, Autocar reports that the upcoming Z4 M35i will not be a replacement for the M Roadster based on the last-generation Z4. Instead, the hottest Z4 will use a 335-hp version of the turbocharged I-6 from the M135i and 135is, and fall under the M Performance umbrella.

Right now, the most powerful Z4 is the sDrive35is (pictured here) that uses the engine rumored to go into the new model. So, what’s the difference, apart from the M Performance name? Allegedly a raft of aesthetic updates. Autocar says that the new range-topper will wear a M-inspired body kit similar to that on the other M Performance cars. Also in store for the Z4 M35i is a retuned chassis with a firmer suspension and sharper steering.

The M35i will join the Z4 lineup next year when the car receives a light facelift. Expect the car to gain more graceful fascias, the latest version of iDrive, and updated wheels. Apart from the rumored M35i, the Z4 range will continue to include the 240-hp, four-cylinder sDrive28i and the 300-hp, six-cylinder sDrive30i.

Autocar expects the facelifted Z4 – and the M35i – to debut in January at the Detroit auto show.
