The tiny Volkswagen Up! microcar has already spawned two corporate siblings, the Seat Mii and the Skoda Citigo, and apparently Audi wants in. A report from Auto Express suggests that a new Audi microcar is in its way, to be called the Audi A0.
The AE report says that this Audi A0 could arrive by 2015 and cites Audi CEO Rupert Stadler as saying that he wants a microcar “by the second half of the decade.” It would ride on the same New Small Family platform as the Volkswagen, Seat, and Skoda versions, and add a more distinctive Audi look and a premium interior. This would mean grafting the corporate Audi trapezoidal grille onto the tiny Volkswagen Up! and possibly integrating luxury features Audi’s high-tech matrix LED headlamps as well.
The report also speculates that the Audi A0 would use the 1.0-liter turbocharged engine from the Up! GT concept to justify its price premium over the mainstream Up!, Citigo, and Mii, which are powered by three-cylinder engines producing either 59 hp or 74 hp. The Up! GT concept was revealed along with many other Up! concepts at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show but was never produced. The all-electric drivetrain from the e-Up! could also make its way into the Audi A0 as an e-Tron model.
If this Audi A0 becomes a reality, it would be produced alongside the Volkswagen, Seat, and Skoda microcars at Volkswagen’s plant in Slovakia. Audi’s smallest model is currently the A1 hatchback, which is about the size of a Mini Cooper.
