Racers rejoice! Mazda confirmed that the hardcore MX-5 GT4 racer will enter limited production, according to a new report. The downside? It’ll cost you over $195,000, and appears to be restricted to teams competing in the British GT series.
Mazda already raced the MX-5 GT4 in Avon Tyres British GT series through its factory team, and according to Autocar, has been rather impressed with its success in the series. Developed with Jota Sport, the MX-5 GT4 has a 0-60 mph time of just three seconds thanks to its 320-hp, 258-lb-ft turbocharged 2.0-liter I-4; a six-speed sequential transmission and a limited slip differential; and a feather-light 2205-lb curb weight.
The MX-5 GT uses the same body as the production Mazda MX-5 Miata, but boasts a carbon fiber front splitter and rear diffuser, a polycarbonate windshield, and a FIA-approved roll cage. The suspension has been upgraded with new coil-over springs along with fully-adjustable Öhlins dampers.
Sam Hignett, the technical director of Jota Sport, told Autocar, "We are still developing the car, but we are now at a point that we can offer this car to customers safe in the knowledge that it is going to be a front runner in any GT4 field. Any team buying the MX-5 GT4 will have a potential winner ready to race."
