Just in case the 2015 Porsche 918 Spider’s record-breaking Nürburgring lap time of 6 minutes and 57 seconds wasn’t quick enough, Porsche R&D chief Wolfgang Hatz just admitted to even greater potential from the plug-in hybrid supercar, according to a report from our colleagues at Motor Trend.

By Hatz’s estimation, the Porsche 918 did not use its full capabilities in the 6:57 run, as the cars did not receive any special tuning or modifications for the track, and Brazilian driver Marc Lieb was told to stop after only three laps around the track when he achieved the final quoted time. Apparently Hatz was happy with the 6:57 time that Lieb achieved early on in the session.

The 2015 Porsche 918 Spider smashed the record for the fastest production car around the Nürburgring, which was previously held by the Dodge Viper ACR at 7 minutes and 12 seconds. Porsche had previously quoted a time of 7:14, but it is now clear that these early predictions underestimated the car’s performance capabilities. The 2015 Porsche 918 Spider is powered by a hybrid drivetrain that puts a total of 887 hp to the road through all four wheels. The car is priced at $845,000 and will go on sale in the U.S. starting next year. Approximately two-thirds of the 918 units to be produced are already spoken for.

As Hatz told MT, he doesn’t know how much faster the 918 could go around the ‘Ring. He did cite the fact that the 918’s rear wing was in a fixed position during the run, meaning that aerodynamic adjustments could be a part of the unrealized potential of the car. We wouldn’t be surprised if Porsche goes back to the Nürburgring in the near future to see what else the 918 Spider can do.

For now, watch the mind-boggling video of the car’s blistering lap around the legendary Nürburgring.
